Grain Alignment by Radiation in Dark Clouds and Cores

چکیده
We study alignment of grains by radiative torques. We found a steep rise in radiative torque efficiency as grain size increases. This allows the larger grains that are known to exist within molecular clouds to be aligned by the attenuated and reddened interstellar radiation field. In particular, we found that, even deep inside giant molecular clouds, e.g., at optical depths corresponding to AV P10, large grains can still be aligned by radiative torques. This means that, contrary to earlier claims, far-infrared/submillimeter polarimetry provides a reliable tool to study magnetic fields of prestellar cores. Our results show that the grain size distribution is important for determining the relation between the degree of polarization and intensity. Grain alignment theory has reached the stage where quantitative predictions of the degree of alignment and its variations with optical depth are possible. With the goal of studying the effect of clumpiness on the sub-millimeter and far infrared polarization we computed the polarization due to alignment via radiative torques within clumpy models of cores and molecular clouds. Our models were bas...

A quantitative analysis of grain alignment in the filamentary dark cloud L1755 in Ophiuchus is presented. We show, that the observed decrease of the polarization to extinction ratio for the inner parts of this quiescent dark cloud can be explained as a result of the decrease of the efficiency of grain alignment. We make quantitative estimates of grain alignment efficiency for six mechanisms, in...
متن کاملPredictions of polarized dust emission from interstellar clouds: spatial variations in the efficiency of radiative torque alignment
Context. Polarization carries information about the magnetic fields in interstellar clouds. The observations of polarized dust emission are used to study the role of magnetic fields in the evolution of molecular clouds and the initial phases of star formation. Therefore, it is important to understand how different cloud regions contribute to the observed polarized signal. Aims. We study the gra...

We present spectropolarimetry of the solid CO feature at 4.67 m along the line of sight to Elias 16, a field star background to the Taurus Dark Cloud. A clear increase in polarization is observed across the feature with the peak of polarization shifted in wavelength relative to the peak of absorption. This shows that dust grains in dense, cold environments (temperatures ~20K or less) can align...

Polarimetry is one of the most informative techniques of studying magnetic fields in molecular clouds. How reliable the interpretation of the polarization maps in terms of magnetic fields is the issue that the grain alignment theory addresses. We show that grain alignment involves several processes acting simultaneously, but on different timescales. We explain that rotating dust grains get subs...
